Southwest Coming To Lihue
It’s happening!  My last posting was about Southwest Airlines applying for a space at Lihue Airport and last week Southwest Airlines was granted their permit.  The revocable permit was recently approved by the Department of Land and Natural Resource, indicating the Dallas- based carrier’s intention of servicing Neighbor Islands.
In October, just two weeks after the airline announced it would enter the Hawaii market, Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said during a conference call with investors that the airline is seriously considering interisland service, although it “has been down our priority list.”  However…that seems to be changing.
Southwest stated: “We are in the process of engaging with communities, we’re meeting with all the Neighbor Islands this week and next week for meetings with civic and business leaders, tourism and media, really making sure we listen to the community before we offer a product so that we know what locals want.”
Last month, the airline was issued a revocable permit for airline operations at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Oahu.

Second Lifeguard Tower Up In Poipu Beach
Two is better than one, and on Friday morning a new tower was put into service at Nukomoi Point at Poipu Beach Park.
The second tower is portable, and was wheeled into place by a crew from the Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau.
The county relocated the Poipu lifeguard tower to a point about 75 yards eastward, closer to Brennecke’s Beach, in preparation for the arrival of this second tower.
This vantage point offers a better view of situations taking place at the beach fronting both the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club.

Water Meter Increase
If you have purchased a vacant parcel of land on Kauai that has a water meter there was a mailing that the Department of Water mailed out that is very time sensitive for you.

If you bought a lot that had a water meter installed that is a bonus, some lots don’t have them.  I think it was about three years ago that the County had given everyone a heads up that they were going to raise the price from $4,600 to $14,115 to install a water meter and this prompted a mad rush to install them to save money.

What your water meter does not have (and has not needed) are the “inner workings” and the cost to drop those in is minimal, $180.00 dollars.  How it’s been playing out is when you go to build you pay the $180.00 to drop in the inner workings of the meter and you have your water for your home.  However that is going to change as of November 29, 2018.  The Water Department wants to keep track of these meters and wants everyone to have the inner workings installed by November 29, 2018, not applied for but installed.  After you install the inner workings the Water Department will check your meter and your monthly cost for that is $17.75.

If you don’t want to go that route you don’t have to, however when you do go to drop in the inner workings it will cost you the difference of the original cost of the meter $4,600 and the new cost of the meter which is currently at $14,115 ($9,515.00), this meter cost is subject to change over the years.  If you go to sell your lot and have not installed the inner workings this will be a huge cost to the new owner.  My advice is to get that done ASAP.  The closer we get to November 29 the busier the plumbers will be to get this done.  I’m happy to help you with a contact person who can do this for you.

If you did not get that mailing contact me and I’ll send you my copy.  If you have questions on the status of your water meter call the billing department at 808-245-5442.

For any other questions the Water Department has another phone number for you 808-245-5421
