17th Fissure Opens Up On Big Island-More Evacuations
Fissure #17 opened up on Kalekamahina Loop Road on the Kalapana side of Highway 132 over the weekend.  The fissure is about 1,200 feet in length, is on private property, and the people who witnessed it said the splatter was going 600 to 800 feet into the air. They said it sounded like jet engines roaring with huge explosions and it could be felt and heard 15-20 miles away.

Officials ordered the closure of all parks in the area and, for the safety of visitors, all inns and vacation rentals must also shut down.  Highway 132 and Highway 137 remain open for local traffic only.  Earthquake activity and ground deformation continue and additional outbreaks in the general area of Leilani Estates were expected.

As a precautionary measure, residents of lower Puna, between Kapoho and Kalapana, are advised to be on the alert in the event of possible gas emissions and volcanic eruption. Officials and residents are keeping a close eye on a crack that formed Friday on Highway 132 between Pahoa and Kapoho.

Blood Irradiator Machine Arrives On Kauai <img src=”image.gif” alt="wilcoxhospital“/>
I have a great update on the community’s efforts in getting a Blood Irradiator machine to Wilcox Hospital here on Kauai!  The goal of $350,000 was reached and my husband and I went to the blessing of the machine at a function at Wilcox Hospital.  We’ve both been supporters of Wilcox to get this machine along with other people from our community.

This machine, which treats blood with radiation to prevent people who have cancer, leukemia and those with certain blood types from getting infections from transfusions, is located in Oahu.  These people either have to go to Oahu or wait for blood to be flown in which can take 48 hours. Currently anyone with leukemia has to go to Oahu for 20 to 30 days for their initial treatment.

The savings to insurance companies are estimated to be between $20,000 and $30,000 per each patient each time.  Let alone the travel costs, stress etc. associated with going to Oahu for treatment.

On to our next goal is a Telemedicine Machine. This is such the logical next step for our island; this machine will allow doctors and patients to confer with specialists on other islands or on different parts of the island.  For a rural community like Kauai the benefits are limitless.

One Lane Opens Up To Hanalei
Just one week ago the communities of Haena and Wainiha were landlocked but now there is one lane open to residents only.  This is brining much relieve to residents there that can now go grocery shopping or to work.

Access is granted by the County of Kauai Emergency Management Agency, using a placard system. To date 625 placards have been distributed to residents, and approximately 180 placards have been distributed to non-governmental workers.  Access is restricted to passenger vehicles only weighing no more than 10,000 pounds. Residents need to follow the escorts and rules while on the road, and access is dependent on the weather.

Currently, HDOT is estimating total cost of repairs for that part of the road to be $40 million. They’re partnering with the Federal Highway Administration to secure funds for the project.  The highway is expected to be opened permanently in three to four months.
