Governor Ige Introduces Phased Reopening <img src=”image.gif” alt="reopeninghawaii“/>
Last week I blogged about the meeting that UHERO had where they said they wanted a definite plan to reopen from the Governor.  UHERO also cited the state of Utah’s website that has color coding and clear descriptions of the reopening phases and where the state is at, the group liked this very much and thought we needed that as well.
On Monday, May 18 Governor Ige unveiled his “Strategy To Reopen”.
I listened to his half hour presentation and here are the takeaways:

  1. Effective immediately we have transitioned to the “Act With Care” phase. There will be 14 days between phases.
  1. We are going to live with COVID, we are to expect that there will be a surge in new cases as we reopen. The states testing capabilities, tracking of new cases and availability of medical facilities are stable enough for us to start reopening.
  1. The lifting of the 14 day quarantine is not included in any of the phases and when asked the Governor did not have a set criteria for what needs to happen in order to lift this.  It seemed like they want to start to reopen the state more and then assess how the new cases impact our system.  The 14 day quarantine was officially extended until the end of June.
  1. Beginning in June: Medium to Higher Risk businesses to reopen.
  1. The Governor’s plan is a framework and the Mayor from each County will set their islands rules with the Governors approving their plans.
  1. I will update this post when we’ve heard from Kauai’s Mayor on what our new rules are.

Hawaii U.S. Representative Asks FAA For Airlines To Test For COVID
Last Wednesday Representative Ed Case is asking the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) if Hawaii can do COVID testing on people before boarding a plane to come here.  In his letter he says this is imperative to Hawaii’s residents and visitors and a safe practice for Hawaii reopening the tourist industry.
Peter Ingram, CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, had previously stated that he felt testing would be a positive thing to do.  That it could help promote Hawaii as a safer destination to come to.

Rep. Ed Case asked the FAA to respond by May 20

Kauai Beaches/Shops Reopen
This last Friday our beaches reopened allowing people to bring their umbrellas and spend a day on the beach with their families.  Kauai lifeguards reported 14,000 people were at the beach this last weekend.
We’ve always been able to access the ocean, and I’ve not seen anyone unable to walk along the beach as long as they were clearly exercising.  So this was really positive and it was great to see umbrellas dotting the shoreline and families enjoying the ocean.

Our retail shops also were able to open and I took a stroll through Kukui’ula Shopping Center to see what was open and I only saw five shops, a couple of them being Crazy Shirts, DEJAVU Surf Shop and SoHa. Bubbas was open and Lapperts never had closed, there is just no place to sit at Bubbas or Lapperts.  In the Poipu Beach Shopping Center Starbucks has reopened.

Want To (Virtually) Walk Through Kiahuna?
I went for a walk on Saturday and walked through the Kiahuna across twin bridges to the beach.  If you would like to take a walk through a part of the resort here is my video, enjoy!
