Hawaii Real Estate And The COVID Driving Force <img src=”image.gif” alt="poipuainaestate“/>
Amidst the pandemic home sales in Hawaii are coming out on top, and there’s not sign of it stopping. In fact, the prediction is the housing sales will do even better when people can start coming over here after October 15. During the pandemic wealthy buyers have been buying properties sight unseen or with their agents “Facetiming” across the state seeking refuge in Hawaii real estate and the prices are rising because of it.
Last year Oahu had seven of the top 10 ZIP codes for median home values, but this year two areas on Kauai’s North Shore knocked two of those off. The Kauai ZIP Codesare within the Hanalei district, which includes the Hanalei, Princeville and Kilauea ZIP Codes, which are all in the top 10 for home values and had some notable sales already this year: Music legend Carlos Santana’s purchase of an $8 million home in Kilauea and Oakley founder James Jannard’s sale of three adjacent homes on Weke Road in Hanalei for a total of $36.75.
The pandemic seems to have heightened people’s desire for more space, couple that with the ability to work virtually and you have rising home sales island wide.

<img src=”image.gif” alt="poipucrater“/>Poipu Beach Real Estate- This last week I put two of my listings in escrow: a 2.65 acre lot in Poipu Aina Estates listed at $700,000 and a lovely Poipu Crater listed at $580,000 (FS). The people buying the lot are here and physically got to see the property. The Poipu Crater condo sold because I had done a video of me walking through the unit and I sent that to the agent along with a floor plan, the people loved it and wrote an offer!

Wilcox Emergency Room Getting Renovated
Our islands level of health care services is important news to those that own property here or wish to own property here. So I’m super happy to report on a project that is moving forward after being in the fundraising stage for over a year.
Work started yesterday on Wilcox Emergency and Trauma Center. The Emergency Department construction project involves creating two trauma resuscitation suites as well as renovating specialty spaces for behavioral health, infectious control, pediatric rooms and OB-GYN care. There are also plans to convert semi-private observation bays to private treatment exam rooms. Renovation costs are $5.2 million which has been raised by a serious of fund raisers.
Wilcox is Kauai’s only Level III Trauma Center and was the first neighbor island medical center to achieve that designation. It is also Hawaii’s first Level III Trauma Center to be verified by the American College of Surgeons. The ER Department averages 25,000 visits annually and sees an average of 450 trauma activations per year.

COVID Testing At Some Mainland Airports
As far back as April I remember hearing the CEO of Hawaiian Airlines talking about this being an option at a UHERO meeting and this idea was very well received. Clearly the airlines have been working on this during the shut down.
By the time you read this more could have changed but I will list what I know for now.
Interisland travel has still not been discussed which is a little crazy. You can plan on traveling to Hawaii on October 15 but can’t plan on going to another island yet. Fingers crossed that we’ll get an answer this week.

Hawaiian Airlines: Drive through testing at LAX & San Fransicso
Hawaiian To Offer Drive Through Testing LA & San Francisco The Droplet Digital PCR shallow nasal swab will meet the state’s guidelines for acceptable tests. Its labs will offer testing for $90 for results within 36 hours, or for $150 for same-day results.

United Airlines: Testing at San Francisco starting October 15. Price is $250.00 and test can be done the day of travel, results will available in 15 minutes of taking the test.

Twenty-Five Turtles On Poipu Beach
On Saturday night I went to the beach with a couple of friends to see if the Sea Turtles would come on to the shore for the night and we were not disappointed.  It was simply magical to watch.  It started with a couple of turtles that came up on the beach and as it got darker we watched more and more coming on to shore.
I had my iPhone which was useless to get a good photo.  Thankfully one of my friends was Alan Hart who takes gorgeous photos and he has allowed me to share them with you.  It looks like we were close to the turtles but we were about 20 feet away, all of these were taken with his telephoto lens. Enjoy!
