Hurricane Douglas

Dominating our news for most of last week was Hurricane Douglas that was on track to come close, or possibly make landfall on Hawaii.  It went down to a Category 1 Hurricane and did not drop down to a tropical storm as was hoped.  A hurricane warning was issued for Oahu and Kauai.  Douglas stayed north of the state and there was zero damage reported, no storm surges or flooding.

With the tracking systems they now have in place we had plenty of time to be prepared.  Costco was busy, folks got their cars filled with gas, tree’s were trimmed and lanai furniture was put away.  We all knew to have our electronics fully charged and to have extra water on hand.  The local news preempted all other programing and kept us updated at all times.  Douglas arrived around the Big Island first but stayed pretty far away.  Then Maui where friends I have on island reported it as a “non-event”.  Next on to Oahu where again it stayed farther north than they initially thought.

Next Douglas made its way across the channel to Kauai.  If Douglas was going to make landfall it was going to be in Hanalei and around 2 a.m., so we went to bed and hoped for the best.  Around 2 a.m. I got up and looked outside and it wasn’t even raining in Poipu.  In the morning there was the good news that for Kauai it was a non-event as well.

Kauai Mayor Closes Vacation Rental Loophole
The County of Kauai stated that they believe they have found a loophole which allows visitors to avoid quarantining in a hotel which is currently the only approved place for a visitor to stay.  Some visitors, they believe, are declaring themselves as “New Residents” on their declaration forms when coming to Kauai.  Some vacation property owners are creating phony six month leases for these visitors at their vacation rental property.  How did the County of Kauai catch on?  They found that some addresses were showing up repeatedly for “new residents”.  A new rule has been created which states:

Effective July 21, 2020
No transient vacation rental or homestay, as defined by the Kaua‘i County Code, may be designated as a quarantine location for a new resident more than once in any six month period. The property owner, property manager, landlord, tenant, and guest shall each be responsible for ensuring compliance with this rule.  This rule has the force and effect of law. Violation of this rule is a misdemeanor, subject to penalty per HRS §127A-29.

Penalty per §127A-29:
Any person violating any rule of the governor or mayor prescribed and promulgated pursuant to this chapter and having the force and effect of law, shall, if it shall be so stated in the rule, be guilty of a misdemeanor. Upon conviction, the person shall be fined not more than $5,000, or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

Amazon Buys Warehouse On Oahu
The day after a 14.5 acre industrial site was listed on Oahu Amazon registered their LLC with the State of Hawaii.  The former Servco Pacific site is located near the Honolulu Harbor.
Amazon paid $1.25 million to acquire the property which closed on July 15, 2020.  It has not been announced what is going to happen but I think it’s safe to assume that Amazon will eventually have a distribution center in Hawaii.

Eating House 1849 In Poipu Beach
I was on Instagram and saw a video posting that Eating House 1849 did that got my full attention!  It was of a spoon slicing through their Melting Hot Chocolate Souffle.  I…was…hypnotized and this just happens to be one of our favorite places to eat.  It gets even better.  They are doing a special; if you order their Fried Chicken (again, my favorite) you get this fabulous dessert for free.

So I’m all in and it didn’t take much to talk my hubby into going.  This was the first time we’ve been there since the shutdown and I wondered what kind of changes there would be.

I noticed right away that there were about half of the tables and it was not as busy.  The service was perfect and the food was excellent.  We started off with the Fried Brussel Sprouts & Cauliflower with toasted pine nuts and raisins mixed with White Balsamic dressing.  Yummy.

Then we each had the Fried Chicken with Goat Cheese Mashed Potatoes with Country Gravy and some green beans.
We each had our own Hot Chocolate Souffle with Raspberry Coulis and Lapperts Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.  I did my own reenactment of the “spoon slicing through the dessert” which I have to say was not as good as what they did on Instagram.  This means I’ll need to go back and try it again.
