Kauai The 4th Tagged For $1.9 Billon Dollar Missile Site
The Missile Defense Agency just added Kauai as a possible site for their new $1.9 billion dollar high-powered ballistic missile radar.  Kauai is the fourth site to be considered, 1 other is on the Big Island and two others on Oahu.
The radar will be 90 feet tall and 50 feet wide, 100 acres of land is needed for construction of this device.  There will be new jobs, housing needed and additional income for whatever island gets picked.

Department Of Water Has $24.6 Million In Excess Funds
The department of water is raising the eyebrows of some Kauai government officials and councilmembers.  Two pieces of news here: 1) The DOW is not subject to legislative scrutiny and 2) The DOW holds excess funding in the amount of $24.6 million.
County government officials and councilmembers have grown increasingly concerned about the lack of accountability at the water department, and said “glaring issues” at the DOW have pushed the board into making a “last-ditch effort” to reign the utility in before councilmembers draft a bill that would allow the county to take over operations.
The DOW dramatically increased their rates around 2013 when water hook up fee’s increased by 30%.  Kauai by far pays the highest water rates in the State.  The average homeowner in Kauai County pays $84.55 a month for water. Honolulu residents are second-highest, with an average rate of $66.72, and Hawaii and Maui County averages are both under $60 a month.
Stay tuned on this one.

Hawaii Vacation Rentals Up Year Over Year 2019
According to the Hawaii Tourism of Authority the supply of vacation rental units was up 11% in 2019 however demand was up 14%.  This resulted in occupancy going up to 75% which is a 1.6 increase from last year. Average Daily Rate up from $181 in 2018 to $234 in 2019.
A “vacation rental” is defined as a private home, condominium or a portion of someone’s home.  What is not accounted for is if they are legal or not.  Data is compiled by properties that are listed on Airbnb, Booking.com, HomeAway (VRBO) and TripAdvisor.
Here is the breakdown:
Kauai saw an 18% increase in ADR at $294.  Occupancy was down 7% to 72%.  It should be noted that the Southwest flights were the last to be rolled out to our island.
Oahu supply dropped by 9% and demand dropped 6%, largely due to the recent passage of legislation cracking down on illegal rentals.

Maui had an occupancy rate of 79% and their demand was the highest in all four counties by 31%.
The Big Island had an increase in demand by 7%.
