The owners of popular Kauai food truck Roots in Culture are trading in their wheels to focus on their first storefront, Kiawe Roots, which will open this month at The Shops at Kukuiula in Poipu.

The new restaurant will be located in the space formerly occupied by Tortilla Republic, which recently consolidated its operations to its downstairs dining room and bar.  The restaurants opening day is June 12 and it will focus on southern-style barbecue with a nod to Asian and Latin flavors.  It will be open for brunch, dinner and happy hour, with a menu including such items as Grandpa’s Chili Arancini, Jawaiian Jerk Pork Ribs , Dad’s Fried Chicken and Kimchi Fried Rice.

Kmart In Lihue To Close

Hawaii’s last Kmart is located in the Kukui Grove Shopping Center in Lihue and it will close its doors in early September.

In a statement Sears stated  “As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline the Company’s operations and focus on our Best Stores, we have identified approximately 100 non‐profitable stores, many of which will begin store closing sales in the near future.  We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which are a critical component in our transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed and as warranted.”

Liquidation sales will start on June 14.

Kmart entered the Hawaii market in 1992, with a store on Nimitz Highway in Honolulu’s Iwilei neighborhood.  At one point the chain had seven stores in the Islands. All four stores on Oahu, in Iwilei, Salt Lake, Waikele and Kapolei have closed. The Maui store closed last year and the location is Kona will be closed by August.

New Urgent Care Opens In Princeville

Stated as “the single most important achievement on Kauai’s North Shore” a new Urgent Care Center was opened in Princeville this last week.  On the North Shore, ambulance dispatch delays are common and the drive to Wilcox Medical Center can take more than an hour. If a patient resides in Wainiha or Haena, the time can be far longer.

The affiliated Mainland medical center is at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and has recruited a team of at least 15 experienced emergency physicians and more than 20 nurses, nurse practitioners and other support personnel. They will fly to Kauai for periods of two to three weeks, during which they’ll staff the new Makana North Shore Urgent Care center on an around-the-clock basis.

The medical staff will be housed in two condo-like apartments on the second floor of the newly constructed clinic building in Princeville at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Hanalei Plantation Road (just behind the existing joint station housing the Kauai Police Department and Kauai Fire Department)

The new facility can offer immediate treatment of illness and minor injuries and will be able to stabilize patients with more serious problems before sending them to Lihue by ambulance. It is equipped with X-ray and laboratory facilities not found elsewhere on the island north of Kapaa. A Kilauea-based pharmacy will open a second location inside the new clinic.
