Last week I was in Las Vegas for the RE/MAX International Convention and Award Ceremony which was held at the MGM Grand. This was a 5 day convention which consisted of classes all day and events at night. Including the Best of RE/MAX Awards. As a bonus, before we left Vegas we went with a group of friends to see Elton John perform at Caesars Palace!!! What a show and if you get a chance go see it, the sets alone were amazing and Elton John was his fabulous self.  I’m very happy to be home and this Convention was worth every minute I was gone.

For a list of everything that has sold, went into escrow and the new listings island wide for last week click here: Kauai Real Estate Update March 5 to March 11, 2018

Wilcox Hospital Adds Vital Service

Within 3 months of a local Poipu Beach resident issuing a challenge to raise funds necessary for Wilcox Hospital to have their own blood irradiator machine I’m happy to say the challenge was met! $350,000 was raised by private donations and the acquisition and installation process has begun.
Why is this so important? Currently this machine, which treats blood with radiation to prevent cancer, leukemia and certain blood types from getting infections from transfusions, is located in Oahu.  These people either have to go to Oahu or wait for blood to be flown in. Currently anyone with leukemia has to go to Oahu for 20 to 30 days for their initial treatment.

Recently there was a pretty serious car wreck and irradiated blood was needed immediately, a cancer patient agreed to have their blood that had been flown in from Oahu, given to the trauma patient instead of themselves.  While this type of generosity is typical of residents here it’s a situation that the people of Wilcox wanted to change.
If you are a property owner here, or want to be, any advancement that Wilcox makes is advancement for our island. The better care residents and visitors receive, the less dependent we are on Oahu, the better for us all. I do participate in donating to Wilcox Hospital and can say firsthand that their commitment to patient care is passionate and impressive.

Monk Seal Population Growing
Monk Seals are a protected endangered species and are unique to our islands. The community has set up volunteer groups to set up ropes around the sleeping Monk Seals that pop up on our beaches and they monitor their population. Poipu Beach has been a popular spot for them since they started to return to Kauai in the 1990’s.
Over the past 3 months their numbers have been on the rise! Currently, an average of between three and five seals are reported daily at Poipu as compared to between one and five seals reported over the past few years.  According to NOAA’s Wednesday released 2017 annual population update, the Hawaiian monk seal population has had a 2% annual growth rate since 2013. The population was estimated at 1,400 seals in 2017, with about 1,100 seals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and 300 seals in the main Hawaiian Islands. As far as babies, 161 pups were counted in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in 2017 and 34 were counted in the main Hawaiian Islands.

RE/MAX International Convention

While at the Las Vegas RE/MAX International Convention I went to the International Showcase which had 62 RE/MAX agencies from around the world that were represented. I asked some of them to say “Aloha” to you and this video is their best attempts at doing so. Turn up your volume and enjoy!
