Zippys In Las Vegas
We don’t have a Zippys here on Kauai but if you’ve watched any TV while your over here you’ve certainly seen their commercials.  Zippys is as popular as McDonalds or Jack In The Box is on the mainland.  They are going to open their first restaurant that is not in Hawaii but….it’s in Las Vegas so its still kind of in Hawaii.  Vegas is considered the 9th Island and has a large Hawaiian population.

The 7,000 sq ft restaurant will be at the cross streets of Badura Avenue and Montessouri Street and their kitchen alone will be another 12,000 sq ft to accommodate future growth for the chain.

Bill To Tax REITS In Hawaii Headed To Conference Committee
A bill that would eliminate the corporate income tax deduction on dividends for real estate investment trusts is headed for conference committee in the Hawaii Legislature.  Senate Bill 301 passed third reading in the House on Friday, but the Senate this week disagreed with a House amendment requiring 10 percent of revenue generated from a tax on REITs to go to the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism to fund economic development.

Those that support the bill say REITs, which own as much as $18 billion in commercial real estate in Hawaii, including the state’s largest hotels, shopping centers and office buildings, should have to pay corporate income tax on the revenue collected in Hawaii just like other companies that do business here.
However those who oppose, including REITs such as Alexander & Baldwin, say the legislation would discourage more investment in Hawaii and point out that their properties generate far more in general excise and use taxes and real property tax than the couple million dollars of corporate income tax is projected to collect.
The bill will now go to conference committee before returning for a final vote in both chambers.

Southwest Airlines Starts Oakland To Maui Service
Last week Southwest made another advance with their mainland to Hawaii routes by implementing their daily service from Maui to Oakland. The carrier will add a second daily Maui-Oakland flight starting tomorrow (Wednesday) and they have more California to Maui flights coming.  In May it’s expected that they will start flying from San Jose to Kona and Honolulu.  As I reported last week flights to Kauai are expected to start July 1 according to my source.
Southwest Effect Already Happening- When Southwest typically enters a market airline prices typically drop by as much as 15%, this is known as the “Southwest Effect”, and it’s already happening.  The Los Angeles Times reported that California the Hawaii airline prices have dropped by 17% year over year.

Hawaiian Airlines Fires Back With JetBlue Codeshare Agreement
Hawaiian Airlines is code-sharing with partner JetBlue and they are now offering a connecting JetBlue redeye overnight service from OAK into New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.  Such a connection eliminates the need for passengers arriving in Oakland in the evening on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to have to overnight in a hotel before flying on to the East Coast.
Southwest Airlines currently does not operate redeye overnight flights to any destination in its route network.
