Sun Country Route Expansion Includes a San Francisco To Hawaii Flight
Sun Country Airlines will be adding a new flight from San Francisco to Honolulu on May 18.  They are also adding 19 seasonal nonstop routes and seven airports this April. Currently Sun Country flies from LAX and Portland, OR to Honolulu.
This is the company’s largest route expansion that they have ever done and they are not cutting any routes to do this expansion.  They were able to do this by adding over 200 employees and increasing their usage 30 planes from their current fleet.

The SF to HNL flight will be coming a month after the projected Southwest expansion to Hawaii.  However Southwest has said they are hoping that the government shutdown does not impact the issuance of their ETOPS certificate.  That remains to be seen at this point.

Fatal Crash Closes Highway For 6 Hours
Sadly on Saturday morning around 5 a.m. a Ford F150 truck crossed the centerline and hit another Ford truck.  The driver of the F150 was a 54 year old man from Kalaheo and he did not survive the crash. The driver of the truck that he hit had some injuries but they were not life threatening.
The South and West side of Kauai were cut off from the rest of the island for 6 hours, no traffic was allowed to cross Halfway Bridge which is where the crash happened.  If you have not heard of Halfway Bridge that is literally right between the Tree Tunnel Road and Lihue.  Having this main artery cut off on a Saturday, one of our busier travel days, caused flights to be missed and a employees not able to get to work.  When people did get to the airport it took them 1 ½ hours to get through TSA.  Both lanes of traffic were opened by noon.

This video was taken by Jill Faye and she graciously allowed me to use it for my blog.  It shows the back up from the highway on into Poipu and it shows the severity of the back up that just Poipu dealt with.  The video starts just as you leave the Tree Tunnel heading into Poipu Beach.

Sheep Have Jobs At New Solar Farm On The South Shore
If you head up Poipu Road, make a left at the gas station you’ll be on Koloa Road. Follow that for a little while and on the left you’ll see a giant new 150 acre solar farm.  The Lawai Solar and Energy Storage Project is the largest facility of its kind in the state and was designed by electrical engineers using cutting-edge technology and potentially revolutionary techniques for capturing, transferring and storing solar power.

The new solar photovoltaic plant is capable of supplying over 10 percent of Kauai’s energy. With Lawai online 40% of the evening power will be supplied by stored solar energy.
Here’s something else that’s fun about this project, they are using sheep to control vegetation in an environmentally friendly way, avoiding fossil fuels and herbicides used in traditional landscape maintenance.
