Norovirus Shuts Down Napali Trail
So far 37 people have come down with the highly contagious Norovirus after hiking and/or camping along the Kalalau Trail on Kauai’s North Shore. The Department of Land and Natural Resourses has closed down the trail and campsites until at least September 19th.
The Norovirus is spread through direct contact with someone that is infected with the virus, eating or drinking contaminated food or water or by touching contaminated surfaces.
The trail head now has police staked out 24/7 to prevent anyone from going into the area. Campers have been cleared out and boat companies have been told not to drop anyone off at the beach. Anyone caught in the area can be cited or arrested.
Add Hawaii Driver’s License To Your iPhone
You can now add your Hawaii driver’s license on your iPhone and Apple Watch. This can be used at certain TSA checkpoints; it looks like the Honolulu International Airport is the only one in our state doing this for right now.
To learn how to do this check out the Hawaii DOT website; https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/id-in-apple-wallet/
United Airlines Files Concern With DOT Over Airline Merger
United Airlines raised a concern they have with the $1.9 Billion Dollar sale of Hawaiian Air to Alaska Air. This does not appear to be a deal breaker but it could slow things down.
Recently Hawaiian & Alaska Airlines made it through their review period with the DOJ and are now being reviewed by the Department Of Transportation. Last week, United Airlines filed a letter with the DOT outlining their concerns about the partnership deals they have with Hawaiian. In looking at United Airlines website their MileagePlus members can earn award miles flying on qualifying Hawaiian interisland flights.
I would imagine this is true of agreements that other airlines have with Hawaiian and/or Alaska so this could be the first in several letters the DOT will get on this. This is not expected to derail the merger but could slow things down as they get this ironed out.
Proposed Cell Tower Has Residents Suing
A California property owner who owns a vacant lot in Ha’ena is being sued after leasing his property to AT&T to build a 95-foot cell tower. The plaintiff’s claim that the cell tower will pose “unreasonable risk and will be a nuisance for nearby residents” by way of the tower’s diesel generator, the risk of the tower falling during a hurricane, the tower being 50 feet from one of the plaintiff’s bedrooms and the overall aesthetic.
AT&T has reduced the tower size from 125 feet to 95 and have said that the tower is a part of the federal mandate to improve emergency services to first responders in Ha’ena which is about as north as you can get on Kauai. AT&T also said they are going to disguise the tower as a Pine Tree.
AT&T is in the early stages of this venture and are just now starting the permitting process.
A North Shore spokesperson said that “Local residents, along with the Hanalei-to-Ha’ena Community Association, are organizing efforts to prevent the permitting and construction of the tower. The community is determined to protect the cultural, environmental and historical integrity of Ha’ena, and will continue to fight against the installation of this commercial structure in their residential neighborhood.”
