Kauai Visitor Spending Hits Record High
For 11 consecutive months visitors to Kauai have been spending, at a minimum, $200 million.  Total spending at the end of November 2023 was at $212.7 compared to $161.6 in 2022 and $135.9 in 2019.  Visitor count to Kauai is also up year to date at 106,907 compared to 101,783 at the end of November 2022 and 103,783 at the end of the first 11 months in 2019.
What is contributing to these numbers is the devasting fires that happened in Maui in August of last year has some tourists visiting the other islands.

Thursday Island Wide Power Outage
Around 2 in the afternoon the entire island of Kauai lost power.  I was in Poipu at the time and this lasted for about an hour, power was not restored to the entire island until 3:20.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) stated; “One of our generation units at our Port Allen generating station lost power, and so it caused the system to trip and it caused an island-wide outage.  So everyone was out of power until we could restart the generator.”
They are still looking into what happened, power outages happen but one that impacts the entire island is rare.  Traffic lights were out, stores had to shut down and it was really best at that point just to stay put wherever you were.

Parking Rates Going Up At Lihue Airport
Starting February 1, 2024 the parking rate at all the airports will be going up but quite a bit.  The first 15 minutes are still free and after that fractional and hourly rates range from $1 to $13 dollars.  To daily rate is going from $15 to $24 and the monthly rate from $150 to $189.

Hawaii Flights Impacted With The Grounding Of 737 MAX 9 Planes
Following the FAA’s grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes Hawaii flights started getting cancelled on Friday with more following in the next several days.  So far I’ve just heard that Alaska flights were cancelled but not sure about United which also uses this aircraft.  Hawaiian Airlines does not have any of these planes in their fleet.
The FAA issued this statement on their website:  “The FAA is requiring immediate inspections of certain Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes before they can return to flight.  Safety will continue to drive our decision-making as we assist the NTSB’s investigation into Alaska Airlines Flight 1282.”
This follows an incident on a Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Ontario, CA which was 16 minutes into it’s flight when the paneled over exit door blew off.  The plane was new and had just gotten it certification two months ago, it had been on 145 flights and on the day this happened it was on it’s third flight of that day.  The aircraft had reached 16,000 feet when this happened and, incredibly, no one was seated in row 26A & B where the door plug was.
When the door plug blew off the plane the oxygen masks immediately came down and there has been no reports of anyone being injured.  They are, however, still looking for the door and believe it to be somewhere around Oregon Route 217 and Barnes Road in the Cedar Hills area.
