Kauai Helicopter Crash Claims Three Lives
Last Thursday a hiker on the Kalalau Trail (Napali Coast) witnessed a helicopter crash into the ocean and texted 911. There were three people aboard the Ali’i Kaua’i Air Tours and Charters helicopter when it went down into the ocean about 440 yards off the coast in the early part of the afternoon. The weather was cloudy but not unusual for that time of year or unusual conditions for helicopter tours to be operating.
The body of a female passenger was recovered but after scouring 830 miles, and 60 hours of searching, the search has been called off. Still missing is the helicopter pilot, who is a Kauai resident, and the husband of the deceased woman.
Involved in the search were local, state and federal agencies. A total of 13 different search parties. The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the cause of the crash.
The Night The Lights Went Out On Kauai
At 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday night my husband and I were watching TV and all power went off. I went out to the street and talked to neighbors but we had a hard time getting any information because the internet had and cell towers were impacted. But, tuning into KONG Radio we found out that the power outage was island-wide.
A fault occurred at the Kapaia substation which caused all the generation units on the island to trip offline. Kapaia is located just north of Lihue. KIUC went to work right away and by 9:30 fifty percent of the island had their power restored. In Poipu the power came back on at 10:40.
By Thursday morning there were still some 3,000 people without power and that looked to be taken care of by that evening.
Man Arrested At Hilo Airport

A 41-year-old tourist from Japan was arrested at Hilo Airport after two grenades were found in his carry on during a routine screening around 5:30 p.m. last Tuesday night. The airport was immediately evacuated and the bomb squad was called in.
It was found the grenades were hollowed out and therefore unable to explode. However, it’s still not an item that would be allowed on an airplane.
The man was charged with terrorist threatening and taken to Hawaii Detention Facility. It’s not known where he got the items. The airport was reopened at 6:50 p.m.
