Haiku Stairs, Also Known As “Stairway To Heaven” To Be Dismantled
Imagine 3,922 stairs along a 2,800 Mountain Trail and at the top are views that can only be dreamed of. These are the famed Haiku Stairs in Oahu that were built during WWII by the Navy for a radio signal that was needed of such strength that going this high up was needed. Built in 1943 these stairs were used in the 1950’s and the Coast Guard allowed access to them.
Climbing up the stairs was being done without much attention until Magnum PI in the 1980’s put it on the radar screen for tourists, the stairs were closed to the public in 1987.
But in the ensuing years this has done little to stop people from trespassing to get to the stairs and, with social media, the situation got increasingly worse.
Arrests have been made, warnings given and fines issued yet, the problem still persists. And that will all stop now with the removal of the stairs which is happening at the end of this month. It will take at least 6 months to complete the job and $2.5 million.
Hit And Run On Kauai’s Southside
On April 15th around 6:30 in the morning a 72 year old woman was walking on Waila’au Road and was hit by a driver of a dark colored full-sized pick up. She sustained serious injuries. Waila’au Road started behind First Hawaiian Bank in Koloa Town, crosses the Bypass Road and winds through some residential neighborhoods before ending at Maluihia (Tree Tunnel) Road.

National Home Sales Year-To-Date 2024 vs 2023
According to Lawrence Yun, the Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors, sales slipped in the Midwest, South and West but rose in the Northeast. While homes sales are down the Median Price is up but with interest rates not coming down yet inventory is not moving as it could be. I don’t think that is the worse news, Buyers still have a bit of breathing room which will evaporate when interest rates go down.
From the NAR site here are the Key Highlights and their graph:
- Existing-home sales retreated 4.3% in March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.19 million. Sales fell 3.7% from the previous year.
- The median existing-home sales price rose 4.8% from March 2023 to $393,500 – the ninth consecutive month of year-over-year price gains and the highest price ever for the month of March.
The inventory of unsold existing homes grew 4.7% from one month ago to 1.11 million at the end of March, or the equivalent of 3.2 months' supply at the current monthly sales pace.
