Homeowner Exemption Filing Deadline September 30th
If you qualify for a homeowner exemption you need to file for that before September 30th.  The difference between having a Homestead Exemption and not are huge, if you qualify this is well worth your time.    This is for, but not limited to, owners of a property that occupy the home as their full time residence.  You need to have owned your home on or before September 30th of the preceding year that you are filing for.

More Details On Kauai Murder Suspect Arrest
The story of the Kauai murder suspect that was evading the police for 10 days was out of the ordinary for our island.  A week ago Sunday we found out that that KPD apprehended the suspect, we now have a few more details on how that happened.
Kauai Police said that the suspects criminal activity started in 1994 and that he is a “very seasoned criminal” who used his extensive criminal history to successfully evade capture.

The U.S. Marshalls, FBI SWAT team and Air Support were brought in to assist KPD, the team numbered 40 in all with 10 support staff.
It was the U.S. Marshalls and KPD who saw the suspect driving a stolen car near Kekaha Beach Park, he had a female passenger with him.  The chase was on but ended when the suspect crashed the car into a light pole.  The Marshalls and KPD closed in on him and shots were fired, one that struck the suspect who was taken to Wilcox Hospital.
The man was identified as a suspect of the shooting that took place on Kahili Mountain Road which killed a 28 year old Kalaheo man and seriously wounded his female companion.  On September 7th     

Kauai Leads The State In August 2023 Hotel Occupancy And RevPAR
Kauai led the state in both occupancy and RevPAR for August, 2023 according the Hawaii Tourism Authority.   Collectively, Hawaii Hotels were at a 74.2% occupancy in August which is a drop from 84.1% in August of 2019 and last years 77% occupancy.  However, the Average Daily Rate (ADR) and Revenue Per Available Unit (RevPAR) were both up 28% and 13% respectively. 
August is the first month that we’ll be seeing the impact of the Maui fires on the rental data where the occupancy at hotels in Maui were down -26%.

Here are the numbers for August 2023 compared to 2022
Kauai 80% Occupancy up 7%,  RevPAR $357 up 9.2%
Oahu 84% Occupancy down 5%, RevPAR $246 Up 5.8%
Maui 52% Occupancy down 26%, RevPAR $294 down 30.4%
Big Island 69% Occupancy down 12%, RevPAR $302  down 2.2%

California Man Dies While Hiking On Kauai
Sadly a California man fell while on a hike last Friday and has died.  The 66 year old man was on a morning hike when he fell 120 feet.  It’s not known at this time if he was alone or not.  He was on the Waipo’o Falls Trail located in Koke’e State Park
