Poipu Beach Real Estate Update-  Just Listed  |  Poipu Crater #27    $975,000
The Poipu Crater resort is so secluded that you can drive right past it without realizing it is there, which is part of what makes it so appealing.  Spread out over seven landscaped acres in the heart of Poipu Beach, this 32-unit community offers a quieter, lower-density setting that works equally well for full-time living, a second home, or vacation rental use.
Unit #27 enjoys a prime interior location within the complex. There is no unit above or below, only one shared wall, and a dedicated parking stall nearby. With three walls that do not adjoin another residence, it offers a level of privacy that is unusual for a condominium.

HGTV Show “Renovation Aloha” In Hot Water
Episode “Bones On The Big Island” drew more attention to it than just the viewers after human bones were found, and filmed, on a recent episode.  Native Hawaiians cried foul and the Hawai’i Attorney General won a court order against HGTV to have the episode taken down, but that didn’t’ happen until after it aired.
The show “Renovation Aloha” centers around a husband and wife that renovate Hawaii properties.  While cameras were filming in the back yard of their latest project on the Big Island they came across a lava tube.  While cameras were still on the husband shines a flashlight on skeletal remains and says: “Holy crap, there’s bones back here!” and the camera focused in on the remains.  The HGTV couple contacted the police and an archaeologist subsequently confirmed that the bones were ancient.  The bones were left in place and the husband and wife duo decided, out of respect, to not develop the lot.
Filming ancient human remains, which are called “iwi kupuna” is illegal under Hawai’i law unless permission is given by the State Burial Council which, in this case clearly was not.  Not to mention it’s incredibly inappropriate culturally and not in keeping with local traditions and values.

HGTV has since issued an apology and are going to re-edit the existing version for future airings of the episode.

More Details On Kauai Helicopter Crash
The pilot from the helicopter that crashed off the Na Pali Coast on March 26th reported that the aircraft had “high frequency vibrations” and then spun around twice before crashing.  There were four other passengers on board, three of them died in the crash and the pilot and one visitor survived.
When the helicopter reached Kalalau Beach he made a standard left hand turn away from the beach.  But on the turn the helicopter started vibrating at a high frequency that came in waves becoming stronger each time.  The helicopter turn to the right on its own and the pilot then put the helicopter into an “autorotation” and the spinning stopped.  After making a mayday call the aircraft went into the water about 75 yards from the shoreline where bystanders quickly did what they could to help.

The Unexpected Link Between Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor Controversy and Kauai’s Mayor
For several months we heard reports about an informant who told the FBI that a  $35,000 illegal campaign donation was given to a “Hawaii politician” but that politician was not named.  Instead, the FBI and our Governor wanted the politician to come forward on their own which prompted finger pointing and statements of innocence were given by politicians all across the state.
It all landed, surprisingly, on Hawai’i Lt. Governor Sylvia Luke who has had an excellent reputation and is running for reelection this year.  She is now the subject of the investigation of the alleged bribe and the speculation has taken its toll on her and her family, so much so that she has withdrawn from the race.
Our Kauai Mayor, Derek Kawakami, had announced in March that he will be running for Lt. Governor.  He has raised nearly $400K for his campaign and has been running commercials for several weeks now highlighting what he has done on Kauai.  Officially no one, not even our Mayor, has filed yet to run for Lieutenant Governor.

What Is Happening Around The State?  New Website Helps
I used to have a vacation rental here on Kauai that I direct rented and this would have been something I would have passed along to my renters.  This new page on Hawaii.com offers updates on events for all of the islands.  The site is organized by island and is constantly being updated.  Businesses and organizations can submit their events by emailing [email protected]

Island of Kauai Statistics
Being a data nerd I appreciate the wealth of information consistently provided by UHERO (University Hawaii Economic Research Organization).  At the beginning of this year, they compiled a data sheet for each island that has pretty much everything you need to know.
If you would like me to send you this sheet email me at [email protected]

For now here are some Kauai highlights at the end of 2025:
