Poipu Beach Real Estate Update-  The Domino Effect.  That is what is happened this last month for Koloa Landing.  On February 28th a $2.295 Million Dollar Two Bedroom went under contract after 3 days of being on the market.  On March 14 a $2.250 unit that had been on the market for 315 days went contingent and two days later a $2.750 unit went under contract before it was listed.  When Buyers see properties moving off the market they jump in and that is exactly what happened here.  For all the Fee Simple real estate activity since the beginning of the year click on this link:  Poipu Beach Fee Simple Current Market Analysis

Kauai Dodges Second Kona Storm
Out of all the islands Kauai was the least impacted by the two Kona Storms that impacted the State within one week of each other.  We’ve had lots of rain, and cloudy weather, but dodged the beating that some of the other islands got.
Oahu had the most flooding it’s seen in over 20 years and the damage is over $1 Billion and counting.  The Wahiawa Dam on Oahu’s North Shore was the biggest concern as it was just feet away from overflowing forcing the evacuation for thousands in the areas of Haleiwa and Waialua.  The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort and the Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber are just some of the 13 hotels that are offering deeply discounted rates, with no resort fee’s, to locals that have been displaced.
While the second storm that hit was not as severe it delivered a bigger punch because the ground was already so saturated and levels of water had not yet gone down that much.
It is behind us now, this week looks to be sunny and dry for the state.
In Poipu Beach they got a truck out to pump the water out of the Poipu Beach Parking Lot which remained at a high level all week.  I took this video on Sunday, March 22.

Major Sewage Spill At Lihue Wastewater Treatment Center
Since March 17 there has been 70,000 gallons of sewage that has been spilling everyday, fortunately it is confined within the Lihue Wastewater Treatment Plant itself which sits near Lihue Airports Runway.  The County issued a statement saying this is not posing a threat to the public or to state waters.
The spill is due to “decreasing capacity for underground injection control wells” and are occurring intermediately.  The rain has exacerbated the problem.  The plant is using additional disinfection in the affected site areas.

$3.1 Million For Water Line Improvements In Hanalei
The water line in Hanalei is over 100 years old and last week work was started to replace the 3,000 feet of water lines. Currently the lines are 2 and 2.5 inches in diameter, they will be upgraded to 8 and 12 inches.
More fire hydrants are being installed as well.

Accident Near Tree Tunnel Road Leaves One Dead
As you’re heading toward the Tree Tunnel, there’s a stretch of curves in the road. At 4:10 a.m. Friday morning, a 35-year-old man driving a Honda sedan crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Toyota SUV driven by a 70-year-old woman from Kapaa.
The driver of the Honda was killed. His 33-year-old female passenger was seriously injured and airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.
According to reports, the man was a Kauai resident with no known address. Speed and weather appear to have been factors in the crash, and toxicology results are pending. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
The road was closed for approximately three hours.

Chuck Norris Passes Away On Kauai
Just days after celebrating his 86th birthday on March 10, Chuck Norris passed away at Wilcox Hospital in Lihue.
Norris and his wife, Gena, owned a four-bedroom, 4,431-square-foot home in Kilauea set on nearly 10 acres. As part-time residents of Kauai, they were known locally for keeping a low profile. Friends and neighbors described them as kind, approachable, and sometimes attending services at Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church in Hanalei of which they were members.
In the days leading up to his passing, Norris had shared a video of himself sparring, noting how grateful he was for his health. Shortly after, he was admitted to Wilcox Hospital. He was reportedly in good spirits at first, but his condition declined, and he passed away soon after.
While he was known worldwide for his roles in action films and the long-running television series Walker, Texas Ranger, Norris had spent recent years living a quieter life, dividing his time and finding a sense of ease here on Kauai.
