This last week a $2.685 home in Wainani went under contract before it hit the market, two lots in Kukui’ula at $3 million and $650K sold before they even hit the market.Buyer behavior has changed and this has more to do with world events than it does with real estate.

Emergency Roadwork In Omao
A pothole on Kaumualii Highway that kept reoccurring. This is what lead the Department of Transportation to do an exploratory excavation of the area and they discovered a “void” 10 feet below the highway pavement. This void is 12 feet wide, 8 feet high and 60 feet in length and all underneath the highway. They believe this is an old irrigation tunnel.
The DOT declared the area a “Traffic Emergency Zone” which allows the DOT to move at a quicker pace to fix this are and certain permits can be waived.
Poipu Roadwork Update
I took this video on Sunday, July 26th starting at the Pe’e and Poipu Road roundabout which is near the Hyatt. Thank you “CC” for the phone call with the heads up that the second roundabout at Kiahuna Plantation Drive and Poipu Road is not going to start for another 8 to 10 months, they will be doing the roundabout at Koloa and Poipu Road first, I called Public works and spoke to the Project Manager for the Poipu Road mobility project last Friday and he confirmed it.
At the main entrance to the Kiahuna Plantation some sidewalk ground work is starting and the temporary crosswalk is still there. Further down by the Kiahuna East Entrance they have retaining walls in and are a little further along in their work.
Along both sides of Poipu Road you can see a lot of progress with the sidewalks that are in various stages of completion.

Alaska Airlines To Replace Hawaiian Interisland Planes
Hawaiian Airlines 717’s are going to be replaced with existing planes from Alaska Airlines fleet of Boeing 737-800 starting in 2028. The 737-800 seat 161 people compared to 128 which is what Hawaiian’s 717’s are now operating. They will also have free Starlink Wi-Fi, power outlets and more reclining seats in premium seats. More immediately three daily round trip flights between Honolulu and Kahului will start this October, 2026.
The company will be doubling its cargo capacity by 2027 by converting four Boeing 737-800 to cargo planes expanding their cargo fleet from 5 to 9 aircraft. The expanded cargo shipments are expected to bring $150 million of new annual profit.
Fausto is weakening as it approaches the Hawaiian islands and is expected to pass north of the state. It’s Monday as I write this and we’re already getting windy weather and cloudier conditions.It’s forecasted that this will intensify through Tuesday with the storm passing by Kauai on Wednesday.
Surf is expected to build on the Eastern side of our state through Wednesday and there is a surf advisory on all South Shore beaches.Strong rip currents are expected as well.
Coqui Frogs Spotted On Kauai
Reader “JA” gave me a heads up about some not great Coqui Frog news and I’ll shoot him a big “Mahalo Nui Loa” for that. In the last month there have been 7 reports of Coqui Frogs on Kauai.This is not the first time we’ve dealt with the small, but noisy, frogs. They were eradicated on Kauai in 2012.
The frogs are tiny, 1 to 2 inches long. But they are loud (90 decibels) and they eat food sources that are important to our native birds and wildlife. If you hear one report it to Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC) by calling 808.643.7378 or going to this website:https://643pest.org
